average men's shoe size in australia
The average man wears about a men's size US 10. Men's sizes US 9 and US 10 are the most common. About 1 in 5 men wear each of them, about 1.9 million men in Australia for each size. About 1 in 45 men wear a men's size US 14 or bigger, about 210,000 men.
These shares are an estimate, not an official count. We merged what 78 online shops stock (74 of them Australian) with published foot length surveys, and we show the range between the two. Counts apply those shares to the 9.7 million men aged 18 and over in the 2021 Census. Pick your size to see how common it is.

how we estimated it
We track men's shoes in sizes US 14 to 17, so we wanted to know how rare those sizes are. We found no published national shoe size survey for Australia, so we built the estimate from two sources that anyone can check. Each one is wrong in a different way, so we merge them and show the range. Then we apply the shares to the Census count of men.
1. what shops stock
On 18 October 2026 we counted every men's shoe in stock, size by size, at 98 online shops. Each size of each shoe counts once, however many pairs the shop holds. We dropped 13 shops whose data was too thin or did not map to men's US sizes. We also left out the 7 shops that put 30% or more of their stock at men's size US 14 or bigger, because their ranges are built for big feet, not for the average man. That left 156,066 in-stock sizes at 78 shops, 74 of them Australian.
Shops tend to stock full size runs, and unisex ranges can put women in men's small sizes, so shop stock likely overstates the smallest and the biggest sizes.
2. foot length
Men's foot length follows a bell curve. The US Army survey ANSUR II puts the median at 271 mm with a standard deviation of 13.2 mm. A second table for US men aged 19 to 65 gives 265 mm and 14 mm. We use the middle of the two, 268 mm and 13.6 mm, and turn length into a men's size with the standard formula: size is about 3 times the foot length in inches, minus 22. Nike's own size chart agrees with it.
Foot length ignores how people choose a size, such as going up a half size for room, so it understates the biggest and smallest sizes.
3. the blend
For each size we take the geometric mean of the two shares (the square root of one times the other), then scale the shares to add up to 100%. The range at each size is the gap between the two methods. The middle sizes are the most certain. At men's size US 14 and up, a man is rare enough that the two methods disagree most, so read those rows as a rough guide.
4. how many men
We apply each share to the number of men in Australia. The 2021 Census counted 9,704,077 men aged 18 and over, and it is the latest Census with published results. Counts are rounded, and each one carries the range of its share, so read them as a guide and not as a headcount.
The Census is a few years old. The ABS estimates 10,870,118 men aged 18 and over in March 2026, about 12% more, so on today's population each count would be about 12% higher. We kept the Census figure because it is an official count that anyone can check.
limits
This is not an official statistic. Both foot length tables describe US adults, not Australians, and shop stock is a proxy for what men buy, not a count of men. The counts treat all adult men as one group, but foot size varies with age and background. Our middle could be off. Other sites put the average nearer US 10.5, mostly without a source (see the FAQ).

what people ask
-
What is the average shoe size for men?
Our estimate puts the average at about a men's size US 9.7, so men's size US 10 is the nearest whole size. Men's sizes US 9 and US 10 are the most common.
-
Why do some sites say the average is size 10.5?
Those figures are anecdotal. Healthline, for example, says there is no official data on the average shoe size for men in the United States and calls about size 10.5 anecdotal. Our estimate comes from shop stock in Australia and measured foot length, and it puts the average at about US 9.7. We cannot rule out that the true average is nearer US 10.5. If it is, men's sizes US 10 and US 11 would each be more common than shown here, and US 8 and US 9 less common.
-
What is the average foot length for men?
About 27 cm (10.6 inches). The US Army survey ANSUR II puts the median at 271 mm, and a second table for US men gives 265 mm. Foot length is not the same as shoe size: a shoe is longer than the foot it holds, and sizes vary by brand.
-
What is the most common men's shoe size?
Men's sizes US 9 and US 10. About 1 in 5 men wear each of them (19% and 20%).
-
Is a men's size US 10 big?
No. A men's size US 10 is one of the two most common sizes: about 20% of men wear it, 34% wear a bigger size and 47% wear a smaller one.
-
Is a men's size US 13 big?
Yes, bigger than most. About 7.3% of men wear a men's size US 13 or bigger, roughly 1 in 14 men. In Australia that is about 710,000 men, within a range of 370,000 to 1.3 million.
-
What percentage of men wear a men's size US 14 or bigger?
About 2.2%, roughly 1 in 45 men. In Australia that is about 210,000 men, within a range of 80,000 to 540,000. This is the roughest part of the estimate, because the two methods disagree most at the biggest sizes.
-
How many men in Australia wear each shoe size?
Of the 9.7 million men aged 18 and over counted in the 2021 Census, about 1.9 million wear a men's size US 9 and about 1.9 million wear a men's size US 10. About 1.5 million wear US 11 and about 1.0 million wear US 12. About 710,000 wear US 13 or bigger, and about 210,000 wear US 14 or bigger. The table on this page lists every size.
-
How accurate are these numbers?
They are an estimate, not an official count. We merged what 78 online shops stock with published foot length surveys, and we show the range between the two. The middle sizes are the most certain. The biggest and smallest sizes are a rough guide.
-
Are the headcounts out of date?
A little. They use the 2021 Census count of 9.7 million men aged 18 and over. The ABS estimates 10.9 million men aged 18 and over in March 2026, about 12% more, so on today's population each count would be about 12% higher. We use the Census because it is the latest official count of men by age, and anyone can check it.
